About Us

Suffragist       v     Suffragette

  • The aim of the Suffragists is to achieve the right to vote for women through constitutional actions.

  • There are regional groups of Suffragists that hold public meetings and campaign locally.

  • The National Union of Women's Suffrage Societies was formed in 1897 and is led by Millicent Fawcett.

  • The NUWSS is instrumental in building legal and constitutional support for the enfranchisement of women.

  • In 1903, Emmeline Pankhurst founded the Women's Social and Political Union with other women frustrated by the lack of progress.

  • Their motto is 'Deeds not words' to show their desire to physically campaign through protests.

  • They are determined to obtain the right to vote for women.

  • They have the belief that a more radical approach is needed as peaceful tactics no longer seem impactful.

  • The initial tactics of the WSPU is to cause disruption.

  • The lack of government action led to members breaking the laws in order to garner the attention needed to get change.

  • This resulted in imprisonment and later on, hunger strikes.

  • The militant action used by the WSPU is successful in getting a high amount of attention for the campaign.
